VERY SHORT NOTES
The town of Meta is located in the Sorrento Peninsula along with the towns of Vico Equense, Piano di Sorrento, Sant 'Agnello, Sorrento and Massa Lubrense. It is famous for its tranquility and it offers tourists a stay during which the natural beauty of the sea and the countryside can be enjoyed.
Meta overlooking the Gulf of Naples and is located about 111 meters above sea level.
It gave his birthplace of Eduardo De Martino (Meta 1838 - London 1912) devoted to painting naval treating subjects at the court of Emperor Dom Pedro of Brazil and Queen Victoria in England. In particular, some frameworks of this author reproducing the Battle of Trafalgar are on display at Buckingham Palace.
INTERESTING PLACES
Basilica of Santa Maria del Lauro: most important place of worship of Meta, according to legend, was built where once stood a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva. Tradition has it that in this place, around the ninth century, an old peasant woman found a golden statue of the Virgin Mary next to a laurel bush :at her feet, there were also a hen with twelve chicks.
The interior of the Basilica has a Latin cross plan, consisting of three naves joined by a system of columns topped by arches. The property is enhanced by a high bell tower in Baroque style.
TRADITIONS AND FOLKLORE
The archconfraternities of SS. Immaculate and SS. Crucifix and Pio Monte dei Morti give life every year during Holy Week rites suggestive of processions .During Maundy Thursday's procession with SS. Immaculate the parade is white , while on Friday evening, and on Friday night,with a procession of SS.Crucifix and Pio Monte dei Morti the parade is black .There is also a live representation :"The Way of the Cross" which is held every two years during Holy Week and that covers the most intense moments of the Passion of Christ.
RAILWAYS
Meta has a station on the railway line Naples - Sorrento Circumvesuviana.
At the exit there is a bus stop for connections to the Amalfi coast and the towns of St. Agata sui due Golfi.
